An oil filter, also known as a filter, or oil grid, is located in the engine lubrication system. The upstream of the filter is the oil pump, and the downstream is the various parts of the engine that need to be lubricated. Oil filters are available in full-flow and split-flow types. The full-flow filter is connected in series between the oil pump and the main oil channel, so it can filter out all the lubricating oil entering the main oil channel. The split-flow cleaner is connected in parallel to the main oil duct and only filters part of the lubricating oil from the oil pump.
The role of an oil filter
The machine filter removes the harmful impurities in the oil from the oil pan, and supplies the crankshaft, connecting rod, camshaft, supercharger, piston ring and other moving pairs with clean oil to lubricate, cool and clean, so as to prolong the life of these parts. To put it simply, the function of the oil filter is to filter the oil, make the oil entering the engine cleaner, and prevent impurities from entering the engine and damaging the delicate parts.
According to the structure, the machine filter is divided into replaceable type, spin-on type and centrifugal type; According to the arrangement in the system, it can be divided into full-flow type and shunt type. The filter materials used in machine filtration include filter paper, felt, metal mesh, nonwovens, etc.
How an oil filter works
During the operation of the engine, metal grinding debris, dust, oxidized carbon deposits at high temperatures, colloidal sediments, water, etc., are constantly mixed with the lubricating oil. The function of the oil filter is to filter out these mechanical impurities and gums, keep the lubricating oil clean, and extend its service life. The oil filter should have strong filtration capacity, low flow resistance, long service life and other properties. Generally, several filters with different filtration capacities are installed in the lubrication system
– Collector filter, primary filter and secondary filter are connected in parallel or series in the main oil duct. (The one connected in series with the main oil channel is called a full-flow filter, and the lubricating oil is all filtered through the filter when the engine is working; It is called a split flow filter in parallel). Among them, the coarse filter is connected in series in the main oil channel, which is full-flow; The secondary filter is connected in parallel in the main oil channel and is a split flow type. Modern car engines are typically equipped with only a filter collector and a full-flow oil filter. The primary filter removes impurities with a particle size of 0.05mm or more from the oil, while the secondary filter is used to remove fine impurities with a particle size of 0.001mm or more.
