WHAT DOES THE FUEL FILTER DO?

The fuel filter keeps fuel running smoothly to the engine. It’s a critical part of the system because today’s fuel injectors have close-fitting parts that are easily clogged by dirt and grit. Instead of creating a fine spray of fuel that burns completely, they start to produce a stream that doesn’t completely ignite. Changing the fuel filter keeps the injectors clean longer, which means more power and better gas mileage.

WHY IS THE FUEL FILTER SO IMPORTANT?

The fuel filter screens debris and keeps it from entering the fuel system.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOURE DRIVING WITH A CLOGGED FUEL FILTER?

Here are five of the bad fuel filter symptoms to watch for:

You have a hard time starting car. If the problem is the fuel filter, and it isnt changed soon, you may find that your vehicle wont start at all.

Misfire or rough idle. A dirty fuel filter could prevent the engine from getting enough fuel.

Vehicle stalling. No one wants to suddenly stop in traffic! But thats what could happen if youre driving with a filter thats passed its prime.

Fuel system component failure. electric fuel pumps can fail prematurely trying to push fuel through a dirty fuel filter.

Loud noises from the fuel pump. Sudden, unusual noises could be your vehicles way of letting you know something is wrong.

How Often Should a Fuel Filter Be Changed?

In the past, vehicle manufacturers recommended changing a fuel filter every 30,000 miles. However, with the vast improvements made to modern vehicles, a fuel pressure test is the best way to determine whether you should change your fuel filter. A fuel pressure test is able to measure the output of PSI from the fuel pump at the fuel lines that transport fuel to the injectors. The fuel pressure should register over 30. If the number reads lower that, you should have your fuel filter replaced.

The fuel system is a critical component when it comes to getting your vehicle moving. When your engine doesnt receive the fuel it needs, it may behave unusually or fail to start. The fuel filter is one of the most important components in the fuel system. It prevents contaminants from entering the fuel lines and damaging vulnerable components within the engine. Modern vehicles have greatly improved the fuel delivery process, but with these improvements, replacing the fuel filter has become a bit more challenging. Now located within the fuel tank, a qualified and Certified Technician should be called upon to replace the fuel filter or perform any repairs on the fuel system.
