What is the difference between internal and external fuel filter elements?

The external fuel filter is usually installed under the chassis, while the internal fuel filter is installed in the fuel tank and is usually combined with the fuel pump.

The working principle of the built-in fuel filter is the same as that of the external product, which allows fuel to flow through it and filter impurities. However, since the built-in fuel filter is integrated with the fuel pump and located in the fuel tank, it is less affected by the environment, and the replacement operation is more complex, so the replacement time and mileage interval are longer.

2. Difference of replacement cycle

It can be imagined that the external fuel filter is installed under the chassis. When driving, sand, dust and muddy water will fall on its surface, causing corrosion and damage to the filter interface and housing, and sometimes being knocked. Therefore, the service life of the external fuel filter is relatively short, and it is usually replaced once every 20000 km.

As the built-in fuel filter combined with the fuel pump is enclosed in the fuel tank, it is basically not affected by external factors, so its service life is long, up to 80,000 km. However, the replacement operation of the built-in fuel filter is relatively complicated. The vehicle owner should pay attention to the fuel quality at ordinary times to avoid that the filter has to be replaced in advance due to too fast blockage.

The fuel filter should be replaced regularly, and there are many problems to be paid attention to when replacing the built-in fuel filter. First of all, to replace the built-in fuel filter, the fuel pump assembly needs to be taken out of the fuel tank, so it is usually necessary to disconnect the negative pole of the battery before operation. Meanwhile, put fire extinguishers near the construction site to avoid fire.

Secondly, when refitting the fuel pump, install it according to the position before removal to ensure that the fuel pump is in the correct position in the fuel tank, so as to avoid the restriction of the action of the oil level sensor and the inaccurate fuel indication. In addition, the relevant sealing rings must be replaced during installation. After installation, the vehicle should also be filled with fuel to check for leaks.

It is much easier to replace the external fuel filter. The installation direction of some filters should be paid attention to. Once the filter element is installed, the internal structure will be damaged. When encountering problems that are difficult to disassemble, do not use brute force blindly to avoid damage and oil leakage of the fuel pipe fixing clip. In addition, when removing the external fuel filter, a clean towel can be used to cover the pipe orifice when disconnecting the pipeline, so as to avoid potential safety hazards caused by fuel injection when disconnecting the pipeline. The pressure can also be released in advance by first disconnecting the power supply of the fuel pump, and then starting the vehicle to consume the remaining gasoline in the pipeline. When the engine is stopped, it indicates that the fuel in the fuel line is exhausted.
