Installation Precautions
1. (Close the fuel cock (if installed) to prevent fuel from draining or siphoning out of the fuel tank, then place a suitable container under the main filter to collect any spilled fuel. Put some suction pads to catch the inevitable Spills.
In most types of engines, the layout of the fuel system is not much different. The fuel is drawn from the fuel tank through the primary filter through the lift pump installed on the motor. From there, the fuel is pushed through one or more secondary filters to the fuel injection pump, which delivers the fuel to the injectors in each cylinder at a higher pressure. Because the fuel injector pump delivers more fuel than can be used, the excess fuel is returned to the fuel tank. Some modern engines are so-called “common rail”, where the fuel injector is supplied by a special type of pipe (common rail) instead of being supplied separately from the fuel injection pump. The fuel system of these engines is different, but in most cases, the filter system will be similar to that described.
After replacing the filter base, you may have to bleed the fuel system
Check your work carefully, then open the fuel cock (if installed). Bleed air from the fuel system. (The bleed process differs for the specific engine. Please consult your manual.) Start the engine and check for leaks. If the engine fails to start, there may be air leakage from the primary filter or the suction side of the lift pump. In this case, please check your work again. Air leaks are usually caused by incorrect assembly of the filter assembly, or you may need to exhaust the engine again.
